Cool story here about a sting operation on the Police for illegal search warrants. Totally expected and Hilarious!
Miss the more frequent updates you used to have...

James Jus,

Good hangin' with you in the Ville, as PITP never disappoints. Remember all we said in your drive way quaffing Coronas and reminicing. More importantly, the emotional and nonquantifiable building blocks that make YOU and I who we are. Let's link up soon, Brickhouse, I say. I'm off to read the Harper's essay.

Peace.

What you are addressing is the ugly cycle of poverty. Poverty and "living in the hood" has so many faces and causes. Yes, indeed the liquor store is making a bundle off of people who are already impoverished and now down on their luck. They use the alcohol to cope and then the government regains any lost revenue they have paid out to the welfare state. Thank you for not indicating that all those who receive public assistance are using it towards the purchase of alcohol, but from what I have seen in areas like the housing projects etc... Sometimes this population is unable to spend efficiently what monies are given and somehow still go without electricity(which is reduced $7 p/month: wouldn't we all love that), gas(reduced too on a sliding fee scale: they sometimes pay a maximum of $30 per/month), and then they receive assistance with food. Not to mention reduced rates with housing. You are right people are pawns in a system and the system often sets them up to fail. No one would say that you were "racist." The truth is the truth and sometimes the trutrh hurts. The reality is that a disporportionate amount of those effected are minority groups. To respond to Mad potter... I know what you mean about the bus. Back in college I used to live in North Royalton and to get to school near downtown was fine, but getting back home meant that I had to leave by a certain time to get home and then the bus only went half way and took almost 45 minutes to get there. Public transportation in the city is great, but go out to the suburbs and a person is SOL.

So what is interesting about solarsquirrel's comment, is that even suburbs themselves aren't' immune to the decay found in the urban environment. The decay just follows the expansion. The problem seems to never be addressed, just move is the simple thing to do when things go in a direction not desired in a community. That model as a model for sustained economic success doesn't seem to fit with the rules of a developed society.
Alternatively, I met a local business person last night at a pub, ironically in the suburbs, ha! I kind of steered the discussion in the direction of small business in Cleveland. I was able to talk with two small business people. One is in home remodeling and the other runs a liquor store in the hood. Funny thing came up about the clients of the liquor store and their purchasing habits. The local population spends alot of money there. I couldn't believe the numbers this guy was throwing around. We talked about welfare and stuff, and how that related to alcohol purchases at state liquor store in the hood. The discussion went like this, the government tax dollars are used to cut welfare checks for those in need. Those in need, not all of course, but at least enough to make this store fat rich and happy, buy alcohol from the state store. The money comes back to the state again through alcohol purchases. It is crazy if you really think of the insanity of it all... What seems like a sunk cost of providing welfare to those that will most likely not contribute to society actually comes back in the form of alcohol revenue. Now before you blow a gasket and play some racist card, just keep in mind this above all conversation was simply just that, a conversation with a local business person that has 'on the job' experience. You can not deny a person their opinion, just like you can't deny me the right to this blog. That is one thing the US, is still cool about, providing the forum to, talk like this. Opinions, ideas, exchanged, this is the freedom that should always be protected!! But anyway, just think about the cash flow in the hood. And I will disagree with anyone who says the stores shouldn't be there. It is a market, and the store is taking advantage of market. If you are free market person proponent, like this guy at work, that says, market's work, market's work, market's work, (so annoying by the way) then you have to accept the fact that this kind of store will exist in this environment. The ugly face of the market shows, but what is interesting from the governments perspective is how the cash flow flows back to the government in the form of alcohol sales.... wow... of course, i don't have facts and figures but from a qualatitive standpoint, it is pretty troubling to think of how people are pawns to the system, but what is more troubling is that I am paying for it everytime i go to work. I agree with the mad potter, my hours at work would benefit society, ie taxes, if the funds went toward transportation- not Highway funds either! Local government!! Think about it, three layers of taxation. That is like having three managers to report too in the same hour, every time you make a choice. And I am sure noone likes reporting to three managers for every decision taken. I don't!!

I used to live in Bedford. Then I moved to Solon. It's like 2 different worlds. Grocery stores, gas stations, buildings, roads...they are all so different. In Bedford if I ordered a pizza, there was a 50% chance it would never get delivered. The grocery stores were dirty and customer service didn't exist. I was in culture shock when I moved to Solon. The grocery stores have sushi and there is more than one checkout line. The gas stations have pumps that work and lighting so you can see. Amazing.

why is Cleveland struggling? You touched a nerve here...... I also attended this meeting and I hate driving to Cleveland. I thought Hmmmm I wonder if I can get to Cleveland from Painesville using public transportation? I spent most of day trying to figure this out. I could get there but then I could not get home. There is very little public transportation linking cities to cities in Northern Ohio. In Europe I can take the rail just about everywhere, even small towns, no big problem.
Here in the States, big problem! I anticipated it would take me most of the afternoon to arrive on Superior Ave from Painesville but I would need to get a room and stay over night in order to get home after 7:30 pm.
I can get to NYC easier on the train than I can get to Cleveland via bus. When I was kid back in the dark ages my Great Grandma would bundle us up and hop on the CTS bus at the end of the street and take us grocery shopping to the Westside Market! At Christmas she would take us to Sterling Linders to see the Christmas tree. She spoke Hungarian but could get around Cleveland on a CTS bus so fast it would make your head spin. If I could get to Cleveland on Public Transportation I would come in more often and spend my Dollars....... why can't Cleveland understand this. Link Akron, Painesville, Ashtabula, the Westside, Toledo and Columbus. I'd rather see my tax dollars go here than a coal burning plant in Meigs county.

Very idealistic. However, the problem is that those with influence only care when it effects their bottom line. Challenging their ideals is very difficult for those who are the working poor. It is very idealistic for one who is a middle class citizen to say to protest against corporations and their marketing strategies, but how can you do this if you have never been equipped to fight such battles. The battle has to begin with buy-in from the community for it to be most effective. Without this buy-in, that there could be better solutions for a more long term and efficient result, your ideals will fall on deaf ears. Also, have you ever thought that such an approach would be more taxing on the working poor. When we think about alternatives. Always remember to consider the feasibility of your dream when related to those whom it effects. Sometimes people have dreams and ideals that cannot be realized because you might be forcing a way of life on other's that they cannot rationalize or understand. Sometimes they lack the skills to implement such tactics. Education is key.

In response to your blog about the roads in CLEVELAND... THEY SUCK.. It is callled some can afford to have decent roads and other's cannot. It is very unfair, but the consensus amongst tax payers in suburban communities is that they pay the taxes so they expect nice roads. I would love not to drive through a pot hole or two on my commute to work. Cleveland is just a mismanaged city. I see it from a micro level of corruption. In my industry alone, people utilize money in a most efficient and ineffective way. It seems to be the political climate of this city. You really have to change the way politics are done here. hey maybe you should run for council or something in government. I am sure you would be better than the numb nuts currently "doing their job."

Peace,
